TV chef Adam Richman knows ways to improve your sad desk lunch

TV chef Adam Richman knows ways to improve your sad desk lunchTV chef Adam Richman knows ways to improve your sad desk lunchCelebrity chef Adam Richmanis best-known from shows like Man vs. Food and Food Fighters, in which eating is a contact sport. But the man knows balance. We caught up with Richman as he was promoting the Taste of the Upper West Side event in New York City, which brings together bites from the best restaurants in the neighborhood, which can in turn offer some of the best food in New York. Yes, thats a lot of food. Richman, who travels often, loves the annual foodie event for its tremendous sense of heart, which almost feels like an old-school New York gruppe party. A fan of old-school delis like Barney Greengrass and Zabars, Richman knows how to eat - and how to balance out food while hes working so he stays healthy. We asked him for his best tips on food and success.Ladders Youre around food all the time. How do you eat while at work on a normal day do you stick t o a routine or do you switch it up?Adam Richman Variety is the spice of life Im trying to watch my girlish figure, so generally I try to eat healthy. Ive been really trying to avoid refined sugar and white flour carbohydrates so when I indulge, I make it countI do drink loads of water and recently cut out soda completely. I was never a big soda drinker, but I would occasionally indulge in diet soda here and there.I also try to eat really good quality proteins and loads of vegetables and try my hardest not to eat too late.Whats your best advice to people who bring in those sad desk lunches every day?Sometimes the addition of one condiment or one topping can make the boring turkey sandwich something very special.By way of an example, you can change up the bread toast it or make it into a wrap then add sun-dried tomatoes, avocado or caramelized onions, and maybe even try your pranke at making a flavored mayonnaise.Salads are perfect opportunities to experiment. Maybe deconstruct your favorite sandwich as a salad, or pick a cuisine you really love and try to figure out a way to infuse its flavors into a bag of spring mix from the supermarket. Can you give us an example of what you eat during your workdays? For breakfast, egg white omelet or frittata, an egg baked in avocado, or avocado on sprouted toast. For lunch, salad with five different colors (mesclun, rocket, kale, gem lettuce or grilled romaine and a variety of vegetables) with a high quality protein like grilled sockeye salmon, seared sushi grade tuna or an antibiotic-free chicken breast. For dinner, usually a grilled fish with some really awesome vegetable sides like sauted spinach with coconut oil, roasted tomatoes or broiled asparagus.Youve had success in so many different mediums. How do you handle success as it comes?Thats really very kind of you to say. Gratitude is the attitude. Like one of my heroes Lin Manuel Miranda said, that nothing here is promised, not one day.Over your career, Im sure youve had to absprache naysayers who said you were in the wrong industry, or thought you should do something else, even when these words come from a place of love. How did you deal with those people? Its hard, you know? Nobody gives you a roadmap in terms of how to be in the public eye, how to do a show thats never been done before, or how to go from anonymity to a place where people know your name and already have strong opinions (both positive and negative), before they even meet youSometimes Ive dealt with negativity better than others, but at the end of the day I have to remember these people are not going to pay my rent, take care of me when I am sick, or help me with my bills. Thats on me I cant live my life with something as toxic as concern for the opinions of others. What is the best advice you can give to anyone who wants to have longevity prosperity in any sort of career?Be kind to everyone be appreciative remember in the information age, anything you put on the web can come ba ck to haunt you and above all, work your butt off. Everybody wants success but no one wants to work for it its the hardest working guys and girls that take home the reward. Never stop learning.

Team Management that Leads to Successful Turnarounds

Team Management that Leads to Successful TurnaroundsTeam Management that Leads to Successful TurnaroundsTeam Management that Leads to Successful Turnarounds Frontiera and Daniel Leidl, co-authors of Team Turnarounds (Jossey-Bass)Youve seen it before in sport, whether at the professional or collegiate level, or even in high school or the pee-wee leagues. Weve all seen it somewhere. The team that welches once the laughingstock, the doormat for the rest of its league, suddenly has a new swagger. No one saw it coming, but theyre unexpectedly winning on a regular basis. In fact, theyre really, really good. While sport provides a unique view into these transformations, they also happen regularly in business. ur research in how to lead a team has demonstrated that turnaround teams are not simply a flip of a switch. To the contrary, leaders play a huge role in team management,as they usher their teams through a long, sometimes painstaking, transformative process. Here are four lessons in team ma nagement from leaders who successfully learned how to lead a team to success.Tell the TruthIf your team is underperforming,it does no good if you keep it to yourself. In fact, that little secret will propel you and your team off a cliff. Instead, the best leaders found creative ways to inform their teams that their results were sub-par.David Helfer, a VP at Juniper Networks, learned that many members of his team were working hard, but focusing on elements of the business that simply werent important.By asking team members what their roles were and carefully listening to their responses, he was able to clear up discrepancies between their perceived and actual roles, and re-direct them down a mora productive path. The Takeaway Before any team can change, it needs to know that change is necessary.Never Serve Cold ToastWithin underperforming teams, many members have to replace bad habits with new behaviors. But behavior change is a tricky thing.Marilyn Masaitis, the owner of Marilyns Din erin New Jersey, noticed that a couple of her regulars had suddenly stopped coming. After doing some legwork, she tracked these folks down and learned that they had been served cold toast. She immediately went to the waitresss house that had served them. Surprisingly, she didnt fire her. Instead, she explained what she had learned, and informed the waitress that the customers absence was $10 out of her pocket every weekend representing $40 per month.Marilyns waitress learned a valuable lesson. She stopped serving cold toast, and the customers returned.Marilyn hit on one of the keys of successful behavior in the workplace Employees need the proper motivation and to understand the consequences of their poor behaviors and the impact on the larger team. The Takeaway Take action to make behavioral change more manageable.Define a Bright FutureNot only is it important to tell the team the truth about their performance and begin to change the small behaviors, it is critical to define the fut ure.For the Indianapolis Colts, the future was an ideal, a place where the organization needed to be.When Bill Polian was hired to be the General Manager for the Colts back in 1997, the team was awful they had been awful for a long, long time. Instead of accepting status quo, however, Polian had a different idea. He began to talk about Super Bowls.Initially, members of the Colts organization, from the front office to the players, were skeptical. But over time, and after Polian repeatedly spoke about how the Colts were going to the Super Bowl, the entire organization began to shift its perception. They slowly began to believe in Polians message. The on-field success followed, and the Colts were one of the top NFL franchises of the 2000s. They also won their Super Bowl in 2006.The Takeaway Create a imagination and back it up with a plan. Re-Define SuccessAs your team begins to replace old behaviors with new behaviors that are more conducive to success, the definition of success needs t o change. After all, if success is to become habit with your team, leaders will need to reframe what success means. For email marketing firm iContact, success was initially defined as being a profitable startup. But once they achieved that milestone and continued to grow, CEO Ryan Allis began to ponder what success meant on a personal level.Rather than fall back on his old definition, Ryan came to the conclusion that for him to lead a truly successful organization, it had to have a positive impact on both the environment and his local community.Allis began to focus on both goals, building them into company presentations and dialogue. He also found ways to measure iContacts progress on both fronts.Soon, others adopted his mindset, and now corporate social responsibility is an important and established part of iContact. The Takeaway Drive change by reframing success. To be clear, leading a turnaround is not easy. Its a profound test of team leadership capabilities. But leaders of busines ses both large and small can learn how to lead a team to success from those who have done it before.Author BiosJoe Frontiera and Dan Leidl are coauthors of Team Turnarounds. Managing partners of Meno Consulting, a firm that specializes in team and leadership development, Frontiera and Leidl have contributed as columnists for WashingtonPost.com. They each have PhDs in sports psychology from West Virginia University.

Meet Cori, a New Grad Facing Life after College

Meet Cori, a New Grad Facing Life after CollegeMeet Cori, a New Grad Facing Life after CollegeMeet Cori, a New Grad Facing Life after CollegeA year ago I wrote a post about the first anniversary of my college graduation. This year, my younger sister Cori graduated from college and is entering the real world. So I thought, what better way to get a new, updated perspective on post-college life than to interview her? Did she have the same lofty ideals that Id had?My sister Cori is almost 22. She just graduated from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst with a Bachelors degree in menschenwrdig Science and Nutrition. Despite being siblings, we couldnt be more different shes active and always on the go, living in the moment. Me? Not so much. But after speaking with her, I realized she and I share many of the same thoughts on life after college. Maybe she doesnt feel the same about what type of life shell end up living, but she has many of the same fears and anxieties I felt upon entering the real world.Me Do you feel prepared for the real world?Cori Yeah, I would think so. As much as anyone I guess.Me How do your friends feel about life after college? Optimistic? Scared? Cori I know theyre really optimistic about getting jobs, but theyre kind of scared about the whole 9-5 structured thing. Its not the same environment that theyve been in the last four years. The lifestyle change is what theyre scared about.Me And how do they compare to you?Cori I feel the same way, but the difference is that I have really high anxiety about finding a job. Ive had a job since I welches 14, whether the paycheck was good or not. Now Im not sure if Ill even get a job, let alone a paycheck. Its nerve-wracking.Me Are you scared about the transition?Cori Yes Of course A lot of people want to graduate because they dont have to do homework and take exams. Not me. I think thats less stressful than working 9-5 and having people rely on you. My whole life is going to change I wont be able to s leep in late and I wont be able to go out at night. Its going to be a big wake-up call.Me What are your post-college plans?Cori Right away, I plan on getting a job. But I hope in the future I can go back to school to get my masters or get an internship so I can become an RD Registered Dietitian.Me Did college prepare you for your post-college life? Cori College as a whole did, but not really the classes. They helped academically and helped me learn responsibilities and time management. Living independently, and my job and intern experiences, have helped me a whole lot more, though.Me How are you searching for jobs and what types of jobs are you looking for?Cori Since Im in the health field, Ive been looking on hospital career pages to see whats open. Ive used Craigslist a little bit, but the jobs arent that great. Ive also been going through places where Ive interned. Im looking for things related to my degree, but if Im in the position where I dont have a job and its been a few mon ths, then Ill take any full- or part-time job.Me What do you hope to make right out of college?Cori Around $20,000 to $30,000 a year. Starting salary for an RD is $40,000 or $50,000 a year, but I cant go for those jobs until I become an RD, which I need to intern for. Its hard to decide whether to get a job that doesnt use my degree, or to intern for my RD. Some internships pay, but very few. Those internships are very competitive and you need to have a great GPA to get them. Almost every other internship you actually have to pay for, positiv you work so much that you cant get a part-time paying job. Thats extremely difficult when youre trying to pay back student loans.Me Have you written your resume?Cori I first wrote it in my junior year everyone has to write it junior year at Amherst. But Ive since updated mine.Me What do you hope life after college will be like?Cori I hope life after college wont be as depressing as I think it will. This, of course, is all stemming from the fact that I just graduated and am facing one of the worst job markets ever. It also comes from the fact that every adult Ive talked to about graduating tells me the same thing Dont worry that the job market is bad right now, many people are in your shoes. Of course this makes me even more worried. So Im hoping I can find a job where I love what I do and I dont have to change who I am. I also hope I can continue to experience new things and appreciate life while getting serious about the real world.

Gender and Sex Discrimination in the Workplace

Gender and Sex Discrimination in the WorkplaceGender and Sex Discrimination in the WorkplaceGender discrimination, sometimes referred to as sex-based discrimination or sexual discrimination,is the unequal treatment of someone based on that persons sex. A civil rights violation, its illegal in the workplace when it affects the terms or conditions of a persons employment. It is addressed by federal law under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Equal Pay Act of 1963 and the Civil Rights Act of 1991, as well as other legislation. States also have their own laws making sex or gender discrimination illegal. Sexual Harassment Sexual harassment falls under the umbrella of gender discrimination. According to company policy, a woman may be entitled to the same perks, advancements, pay and other benefits as her male counterpart, but behavior toward her in the workplace may be untenable and its usually related to her gender. I am aya youre familiar with the 2017 MeToo movement bir thed by sexual harassment claims made against Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein when actress Ashley Judd shared her story with major news outlets. Years earlier, Weinstein threatened Judd if she didnt agree to a sexual act. Hollywoods examples are extreme, but this would be the case if Judd were subjected to unwelcome touching or even offensive jokes aimed at her sex or sexual identity. And while a single joke may seem appropriate (to some), repeated jokes on a daily or frequent basis constitute harassment. Harassment can also involve promises of advancement in exchange for sexual favors. Not Just Men The womans harasser does bedrngnis necessarily have to be a male. And the victim doesnt always have to be a woman - men can also be the target. Women can be just as guilty of sexual harassment. Similarly, the harasser does not necessarily have to be the womans boss or supervisor. Its still harassment if a coworker or client is the source of the behavior and the companys management does nothing to put a stop to it. What Constitutes Discrimination The proverbial glass ceiling is a classic exampleof workplace gender discrimination. This is the unwritten code that women cannot hold certain senior positions and are prevented from advancing beyond a certain point because of gender despite their skills, talents, and qualifications. Promotional Bias The glass ceiling situation falls under the category of promotional bias. There are various reasons for this - having children being the main one. The glass ceilingmovement, birthed in the late 1900s, was supposed to shatter the barrier (i.e., ceiling) that prevented women from moving up the corporate ladder. And, although women have come a long way, theyre not there yet. In 1990, there were six women on the Fortune 500 list of CEOs. In 2017, there were 32 women. Thats more women, but not enough - considering were talking about 500 CEOs. But sexual discrimination goes further than CEOship. A man and woman may hol d the exact same position and perform the same duties within a company, but the job title is different. The man may also be paid more, or he may be entitled to raises or promotions on a different schedule, and at a faster pace than his female colleagues. Interview Questions The interview process should be similar (if not the same) for both genders. But women are frequently expected to field different types of questions. Women are often asked if they have children or if they intend to have children. These types of questions are illegal, and more importantly, have no bearing on a persons ability to do a job well. However, many employers predicate hiring potential employees on the notion that they might need to take maternity leave.Employers need to consider that fathers (whether straight or gay) may need to take paternity leave. Neither gender should be asked thequestion. Terminations All too often, terminations are handled with gender bias. It can be especially prevalent in m ale-dominated industries (such as manufacturing) where sexual harassment is not taken seriously. There are cases of women who have complained about gender bias and found themselves unemployed. A female engineer at luxury car manufacturer Tesla, AJ Vandermeyden, accused the manufacturer of ignoring her complaints of sexual harassment and paying her less than her male counterparts. Then, she was fired in what her lawyer alleged was an act of retaliation. Vandermeyden, who went public, also claimed she was taunted and catcalled by male employees and that Tesla failed to address her complaints about the harassment, unequal pay and discrimination. But this is just one example, and there are many more people who experience sexual harassment out there. Most people arent as brave as Vandermeyden was to speak up for fear of a blemished work record and/or a bad reputation in their industry. How to Report Discrimination If you or someone you know is a victim of gender discrimination in the workplace (male, female, bi or trans), write it down. Make sure you document what happened, who was involved, the date and time of the incident, and anyone who may be a witness. And be sure to ask them to also make notes on what happened. Next, youll need to report it. There is usually a chain you need to follow. First, speak to your supervisor to address the problem. If your supervisor is the cause of your complaint, go to that persons boss. If you feel the problem is not dealt with to your satisfaction, go to your companys human resources department. If the situation persists, you can contact the Equal Employment Opportunity Commissionand file a charge of discrimination - a first step before you resort to suing your employer. But, before you sue, meet with an attorney to determine what the requirements are where you work. You may have as little as six months to file a charge and the EEOC typically must investigate your complaint first before youre permitted to take other civil a ction. The Bottom Line Gender or sex-based discrimination is against the law. The target doesnt have to be a woman, just like the harasser isnt always a male. There is no place for it in anyones place of employment. If you or someone you know experiences it, be sure there is proper documentation and that the incident is reported. Remember, no one should ever have to experience gender or sex-based discrimination.
